Industry speakers highlight our second event
We had speakers and studios from Ottawa to Montreal, and featured everything from art lessons, personal advertising tips and much more. Hosted at Saw Gallery in downtown Ottawa, the night consisted of talks from local artists and businesses. A local brewer provided refreshment and a creative space for our attendees to post their art!
At our second Pens & Pixels event, we got our members involved by hosting our very first art contest! The prize for the winner had their artwork printed and framed on canvas, courtesy of CanvasPop. The winning piece was then put up front and centre for the night and the winner got to take their print home! Congratulation to Ehren English, for her awesome entry.
The event kicked off with Jamie Muntean. Jamie's work spans over 13 years in the Animation / Motion Design Industry. From London's Passion Pictures as a P.A. and Assistant Animator, to later focusing on Motion Design, Jamie has worked on everything from big Ad campaigns, co-creation of fully animated television series, to video branding and small start-up explainer videos. Now he works as part of the Speakeasy Collective, and joined us to talk about the creative process behind motion design.
Our evening continued with Kristopher Waddell. Kristopher has worked for a number of years in the film industry both in Ottawa and Vancouver. Focusing on creator owned work, writing and independent production Kristopher now serves as President at Winter Star Comics. Kristopher shared stokes and advice from working on such series as Challenger, Sunset Coast, many more.
Up next was Jordan Danger. CEO of Danger Communications, Jordan specializes in public outreach and marketing for businesses and non-profits, with a focus on genuinely engaging your audience with social media, one-off events/stunts, and network building. For our event she shared her knowledge in how to better advertise, market and sell your art and yourself in todays online world.
Last but not least came our special guest: Steambot Studios! Driving all the way from Montreal, Steambot is a Canadian creative agency specializing in idea development and concept art. Founded in 2006 by Sébastien Larroudé, Joël Dos Reis Viegas and Nicolas Ferrand, Steambot rapidly became the place to go for, art, creativity and pushing boundaries. Their work speaks for itself with projects such as X-men Days of Future Past, Batman Arkham Origins, Godzilla (2014), and Tron Legacy to name a few. They wowed our crowd with their process of creation and some of their upcoming work on their new animated series Urbance!
The whole evening was a huge success: four amazing speakers, yummy treats provided by Ottawa Tax Services, and free beer generously donated by local brewer Nickel Brooke Brewery. We all left feeling inspired and motivated to go out and create!
